Just around 15:00 hours while the Rescue and Chief were clearing a vehicle into a structure, units were alerted for several reports of a train derailment in the area of Kings Highway and Federal Drive. Information was given that there were multiple overturned rail cars. Engine and Chief 1 were the first to arrive to find three rail cars overturned carrying coal. Chief 1 took "Kings Highway Command" and Engine 1 began reconing the area. Fredericksburg Tower 1 arrived shortly after and was also assigned to Recon and locating the Conductor of the train. Battalion Chief 1 arrived and was assigned the "Recon Group Supervisor" with Engine 1 and Fredericksburg Tower 1 working under him. Rescue 1 and Medic 11 then arrived with Rescue 1's officer taking the "Rescue Group". The Recon group quickly advised command that there were only two occupants on the train who weren't injured, and only coal was being transported on the one hundred car train. Upon arrival Quint 12 was also assigned to the Recon Group while the remainder of the units went to staging. After a complete investigation, units found a total of five rail cars derailed with three overturned, and two unstable. Units operated on the scene for about two hours.
