Engine 6 was first to arrive to locate one vehicle overturned and down a embankment. After investigating further Engine 6 found that one occupant was trapped and began stabilization efforts. Engine 12 was assigned to provide patient care. Rescue 1 then arrived and completed a controlled lower of the vehicle to remove it from the tree. Once the vehicle was safely lowered the patient was quickly removed from the passenger side. Medic 7 and 11 packaged the patient and transported to Mary Washington Hospital. Engine 1 took a position in the front and deployed a 1 3/4" attackline through the front door. The Engine found fire in the garage and began extinguishment. Engine 7 arrived next, secured the water supply, and took a line above to check for extension. The fire was knocked down within five minutes and all searches of the home proved negative. Rescue Engine 7 was first to arrive to find a single story wood frame dwelling with fire throughout and began defensive operations. Chief 1 arrived within seconds and established the "Bethel Church Command" on side Alpha. Engine 1 arrived next and advanced a back up line. Command transitioned to an offensive operation and Engine 1 began an interior attack knocking the bulk of the fire down. Assistant Chief 1 arrived and was assigned the Attack Group Supervisor while Engine 1 set up for rural water operations. Engine 12 was assigned RIT on arrival but was relieved by members of Company 7 personnel. Searches were completed with negative results and all crews worked extremely hard to complete the extensive overhaul. Company 1 units cleared in just under four hours. Engine 1(Rice) was diverted to the accident and arrived just after dispatch with one vehicle on its side, over the embankment, into a tree with one trapped. Chief 1 arrived next taking "Leeland Road Command." Engine 2(Castle), Rescue 1(Rolle), and Rescue 5(Dyke) all arrived within a thirty second window and began setting up for a controlled lower of the vehicle back to all four wheels. This was done by utilizing the winch from Rescue 1 with a change of direction at Rescue 5 then to the under carriage of the vehicle. Engine 2 utilized the grip hoist from a tree and by wrapping the B and C posts to create an opposing tension. The vehicle was then lowered back down to all four wheels and crews performed a total door/ roof removal. The patient was then removed and turned over to awaiting EMS personnel. The operation took 40 minutes to complete but units were on the scene for approximately one and a half hours. Rescue 1 then arrived and completed a side removal on the driver side while Engine 9 also completed a side removal on the passenger side. After investigating, Engine 1 found two occupants trapped inside one of the vehicles and upgraded the assignment bringing Rescue 1 (Turnbull) and Chief 1. Engine 1 established the "Kings Highway Command", deployed the protection line and began to stabilize the vehicle. The Rescue and Chief quickly arrived, with Chief 1 taking the "Rescue Group Supervisor" position while Rescue 1 finished the stabilization and completed a roof removal. While Rescue Engine 14 stabilized the vehicle and began extrication Engine 9 deployed a protection handline. Rescue 1 arrived next and removed the roof from the vehicle noticing the patients legs were pinned by the dash. Rescue 1 then utilized hydraulic rams and a spreader to push off of the pinned patients legs to complete the extrication. The extrication was complete within 33 minutes after arrival of Rescue 1. Engine 14 advanced a handline as Engine 2 was advancing a back up line and securing the water supply. The Operations Deputy arrived and assumed the command from Engine 2. Minutes later Rescue 1 arrived and completed the primary searches which proved negative and then began assisting crews opening up to extinguish the remaining fire. While operating on a house fire in St. Leonard today Firefighter Michael Montgomery Jr. received 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his right leg from the knee down to the foot after falling through the floor of a single family home that was heavily involved upon arrival of units. The fire was knocked down in five minutes and was contained to the exterior of the building. All units were searched and ventilated. Battalion 1 held the "Cambridge Command". Rescue 1 responded due to the report and found one vehicle overturned in the ditch with a subject still inside. Rescue 1 began stabilizing the vehicle. Due to the position of the vehicle stabilization efforts were on going during the extrication process. The Rescue crew used the AMKUS extrication tools to perform a side removal to gain access to the patient. Quint 12 and Engine 2 arrived to assist. The patient was treated and transported to Mary Washington Hospital. Quint 12 arrived on scene and reported a two vehicle motor vehicle collision with two patients trapped. Rescue 1 arrived and was assigned the Extrication Group by Battalion 1 who held the "Enon Command". Engine 2 arrived and began extrication efforts on the second vehicle. Both patients were extricated within twenty-five minutes and transported to area hospitals. All crews worked extremely well together during this complex incident. Rescue and MSU 1 arrived to find all occupants had made their way to shore prior. The crew contacted VDOT who placed signs and traffic cones on both ends of River Road indicating the road was closed. The second incident occurred at 04:20 hours and Rescue 1 arrived to find one occupied vehicle in the water with the river rapidly rising. Rescue swimmers were rapidly deployed and the victim was removed from the vehicle and brought safely to shore. The victim denied and injury and refused treatment or assessment. Once the operation was complete crews discovered the signage placed earlier had been removed from the roadway. The Stafford Sheriff's Office and Fire Rescue personnel located the signs and put them back in place. On May 21st the third water rescue was dispatched for four subjects in the water in the area of Riverside Drive in the city of Fredericksburg. Rescue and MSU 1 arrived on scene to find a mother and her three children on two individual rocks in the Rappahannock River. Two rescue swimmers from Falmouth entered the water to affect the rescue. They were assisted by two kayakers that were in the area. The rescue plan was formed and all of the victims were removed without injury.
