At 19:09 hours the Engine and Rescue were alerted for an auto accident with entrapment in the area of the 140 Northbound on Interstate I-95. The Engine and Rescue Company responded bringing 8 volunteers. While responding the Stafford E.C.C. advised a Stafford Sheriff's office unit was on scene with confirmed entrapment. Engine 2 arrived on scene with two trapped and started extrication. Engine 1 then arrived on scene to find a two vehicle accident with one pinned and one trapped while Engine 12 established the "I-95 Command". Rescue 1 took positioning with the officer taking the "extrication supervisor" duties. The crew then ensured stabilization efforts were completed. Once the vehicles were completely stabilized units on scene then resumed the extrication using the AMKUS Rescue Tools. Falmouth units worked together to remove two doors and removed the first trapped subject while Engine 2 started on the other vehicle. Rescue 1's crew then assisted Engine 2 on the second car with removing the roof. The Rescue made a relief cut under the dash and on the driver side fender to perform a high dash lift. Once the roof was removed the Rescue began lifting the dash. The dash was lifted off of the pinned patient's lower extremities but the brake pedal was still holding the patient's lower leg. Rescue 1's driver then utilized a pedal cutter to complete the extrication. Both subjects were transferred to awaiting medic units and transported to the trauma center.
All units worked extremely well together on this difficult extrication. Unfortunately during the incident Engine 2's officer sustained an injury to his hand and was transported the hospital. The Officers and Members of the Falmouth Volunteer Fire Department want to wish our fellow volunteer brother a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on 2 Engine very soon.
