Stafford E.C.C. started receiving numerous calls just after 14:00 hours for a report of a large brush fire at the end of Greenbank Road in Southern Stafford County. Initial reports from the callers stated that it was possibly 100 acres in size and spreading rapidly due to high winds. A Stafford Fire Marshal responding to the incident upgraded the call after spotting a large column of smoke in the general vicinity bringing Wagon, Brush, and Chief 1 with 7 men. Brush 6 arrived first and confirmed the information. FM-3 arrived a short time later and established Greenbank Command. Once Chief 1 arrived, command was passed and FM-3 took operations. Due to the large area involved the incident was broken into two divisions and units were assigned accordingly. Units commendeered John Deere Gators from a golf course located near by to shuttle equipment and personnel to fire areas. LifeEvac 2, normally a medical transport helicopter, was requested for an aerial recon. Quantico Fire Department was also requested for mutual-aid for their expertise in large brush fires and their specialized equipment. Virginia Department of Forestry responded also with their equipment and a dozer. Multiple units operated for about 3 hours and using global positioning equipment the VDOF estimated the size of the fire to be about 40 acres. The incident was marked under-control at 17:30 hours.
