Fry Your Turkey Safely!

*** HELPFUL HINTS WHEN OPERATING A TURKEY FRYER

A longtime Southern favorite, deep-fried turkey has quickly grown in popularity, resulting in a significant rise in fires and related injuries associated with these cooking devices.

The Falmouth Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department does not recommend the use of a Turkey Fryer for cooking; however, we understand their popularity and the fact that they are widely used. Extreme caution should be exercised when turkey fryers are used. Safety Experts from Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) are concerned about the popularity and mis-use of these devices. The Fire/EMS Departments shares UL concerns about the increasing reports of fires related with turkey fryer use. UL does not certify any turkey fryers.

Falmouth Volunteers urge all to be fully aware of the hazards associated with turkey frying and to use extreme caution.

*** ALWAYS Remember to follow these Fire Safety Precautions:

" Use turkey fryers outdoors, at a safe distance from buildings and combustibles, and in full view of responsible adults

" Make sure that there is at least 24 inches between the fryer burner and the propane tank

" Place fryers on a flat, stable surface, and keep an all-purpose fire extinguisher nearby

" Make sure to completely follow the manufacturer's recommendations for safe operation.

" Use potholders or kitchen mitts when working with pot covers and handles. Use safety glasses when appropriate to avoid eye injuries due to splattering oil.

" Thaw your turkey completely before placing it in the fryer. To avoid bacteria contamination, thaw a frozen bird in the refrigerator and allow approximately 24 hours of thawing time for every five pounds of bird. Remember, oil and water do not mix, so pat the bird dry before placing it in the fryer. Cook to at least 168ÚF. Use a food thermometer to check temperature.

" Keep children and pets away from the fryer during cooking and several hours after use.

" Make sure the oil is completely cooled before removing it from the fryer.

*** NEVER!

" Use water to extinguish a grease/oil fire.

" Use on wooden decks, carports or garages. Spills may ignite nearby combustibles and cause burns.

" Attempt to move the fryer once it is in operation.

" Try to fight a fire that has extended beyond the cooker.

*** IN CASE OF A FIRE, IMMEDIATELY CALL 9-1-1 and get your family to a safe place.

Falmouth Volunteers hope everyone in our Community has a Safe and Happy Holiday!
