At 15:50 hours Falmouth units were again on the way to Hartwood for a residential structure fire located this time at 448 Hartwood Road. Initial reports were received from passing motorists reporting a barn on fire with animals trapped inside. Engine 6 arrived first advising they had a barn on fire but were having problems accessing the fire building due to vehicles blocking the driveway. Units were able to get the private vehicles moved quickly and access the driveway leading to the barn. The barn was 100% involved on arrival of Engine 6. Quint 12 arrived next, followed by Fauquier Tanker 8. Units began to set up drop tanks for a water shuttle operation. Engine 1, Rescue 1, and Chief-1 arrived with the Chief establishing the "Hartwood Road Command". Quint 12's officer was assigned the Fire Attack Group Supervisor and all units were held to a defensive posture for operations on the incident. The crew from Engine 1 pulled 300' 1 3/4" line off to help with extinguishment and Rescue 1 took on truck duties to gain access to hot spots. One patient was assessed by Medic 6 for possible smoke inhalation due to the patient attempting to rescue the animals from the fire building prior to the fire units arrival. Medic 6 obtained a patient refusal.
VDOT was requested for a piece of equipment to assist in de-layering of the burned materials onsite for effective extinguishment. All units continued operating and awaited the arrival of Fire Marshal 3 and VDOT. Company 1 cleared in just over an hour with the remaining units clearing at 18:50.
